Alternative Designs - Plantsbrook Magazine Front Page
The designs for the front page of the Plantsbrook Magazine all show at least one subject of the photo. One shows a student posing for the camera, another shows a student in an exam, and the last one shows a group of students on a school bench, one of who is studying. Each one advertises entries to the 'upcoming winter concert', advice for revision for upcoming exams, and contact information for the school.

School Magazine - Front page
The masthead for the front page is the letters 'PB' coming out of an open book. The abbreviation of the word 'Plantsbrook' implies that the reader should know what PB means, and the book symbolizes the education and intellect of the school. The tagline uses inclusive language that appeals to the reader.
The photo is of a group of students on a bench outside. Since one of them is sitting on top of the bench, it appeals to students, as it shows that they have a lot of freedom in Plantsbrook and aren't under strictly enforced rules. However, the fact that the student is studying will appeal to parents, as they see that, even though the students are given freedom, they are driven to work hard and do well themselves.
Anchorage text again reinforces how the students should want to study and do well, and the school is helping them to do that.
Text stating that it will aid students with mocks and that they have their 'chance to shine' in the winter concert will appeal to those reading.
The cover also shows an opportunity to win an iPod, which will appeal to teenage students, and a phone number at the bottom right so that those who want to contact the school for further information can do.

Portrait Photos
Created with flickr slideshow.
In photography so far, I've learned about:
The rule of thirds, in which the screen is split into three equal parts. The subject of the photo is commonly placed in one of the side thirds.
The Depth of Field is how the difference in distance between subjects in a photo affect the sharpness. How it is used depends on what the photographer is trying to capture.
Lighting can be used to change how a photo looks. It can by synthetic or natural.
A visual lead-in is a line that the viewer can follow to the subject of the photo. For example, a shutter, or the horizon.
Blurs in a photograph can show movement.
The model/subject position tells the story of the photo
